At first glance, the de Havilland DHC-1 Chipmunk is an unassuming little aeroplane, and yet for countless pilots across generations, its lines are etched as deeply into memory as the sound of its Gipsy Major engine at full song. Eighty years have passed since a cold Canadian morning in May 1946 when the prototype Chipmunk lifted from the runway at Downsview, Ontario. It was a moment that bridged eras: a World War behind, the jet age ahead, and between them, a small trainer that would quietly shape the future of flight.
