Spitfire 85 - Commemorating the Anniversary of the First Flight of the Type 300, Spitfire Prototype
We will be celebrating the first flight of the Spitfire on 5 March as part of Spitfest, the Museum’s tribute to this iconic fighter. Spitfires served at Middle Wallop for 17 years from the air station’s inspection in 1940 to its handover to the newly formed Army Air Corps in 1957.
Spitfest was originally planned for last September to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, but it has now been moved forward to 2021. The first event is a Lecture by Paul Beaver to remember the first flight of the Type 300, the Spitfire’s prototype. Paul a regular lecturer at the Museum and is Vice-President of the Spitfire Society for whom it has extensively researched the early development of the fighter aeroplane.
